AppLovin (NASDAQ: APP) reported third-quarter 2026 results after the market closed on Wednesday, November 4. The quarter ended September 30. Revenue, profit, and the company’s fourth-quarter outlook all came in above the analyst estimates published by Investing.com and Benzinga. This post covers what AppLovin does, what the numbers mean, and how to read them.
What AppLovin Actually Does
AppLovin is an advertising technology company. It doesn’t make the ads, and it doesn’t own the apps where ads appear. Its software sits in the middle: advertisers pay to reach people, app publishers sell ad space, and AppLovin’s systems decide which ad to show to which user, and at what price, in a fraction of a second.
The core of that system is AppLovin’s machine-learning ad engine, known as Axon. Think of it as a prediction machine. Every time an ad slot opens, the model estimates how likely a user is to install a game or buy a product, and advertisers bid based on that prediction. Better predictions usually mean advertisers get more return for each dollar, and they tend to spend more.

Beat vs. Estimates, and Why the Estimates Differ
Investing.com listed consensus at $4.04 EPS and $2.08B revenue. Benzinga listed $4.07 and $2.078B. Measured against those, AppLovin beat EPS by roughly $0.23 to $0.26 and revenue by about 5%.
Why two different consensus numbers? “Consensus” is an average of analyst forecasts, and each data provider surveys a slightly different group of analysts and updates it on its own schedule. Small gaps like these are normal. What matters more is the direction: by both measures, the results came in above expectations.
What Drove the Quarter: Model Upgrades
CFO Matt Stumpf said on the earnings call that revenue grew 14% from the prior quarter and topped the high end of guidance by about $100 million, “primarily driven by the core mobile gaming business due to model improvements during the quarter, with continued scaling in the consumer vertical.”
“Consumer” refers to non-gaming advertisers, such as e-commerce brands, which AppLovin has been working to add. Stumpf said consumer advertiser spend was “up double digits quarter over quarter and growing triple digits from the same quarter last year.”
CEO Adam Foroughi said the company only partly rolled out a new generation of its ad models during the quarter: “this was a partial rollout. The transition is still in front of us.” He also cautioned that “model gains won’t land on a perfect quarterly schedule and we won’t promise a cadence.” That caution matters. Gains from AI models can come in uneven bursts, and management is not promising a steady pace of improvement.
Net Income vs. Adjusted EBITDA: Two Lenses
Net income ($1.44B, a 66% margin) is the official GAAP bottom line after all expenses, including interest, taxes, and stock-based compensation (SBC).
Adjusted EBITDA ($1.84B, an 84% margin) is a company-defined, non-GAAP figure. It adds back items like interest, taxes, depreciation, amortization, and SBC. In Q3, SBC was about $84 million, up from about $34 million a year earlier. Adjusted EBITDA is useful for comparing operating performance from one period to the next, but it isn’t a substitute for GAAP results. SBC is a real cost to shareholders because it dilutes ownership.
Cash, Buybacks, and Debt
Operating cash flow was $1.43B, and free cash flow (operating cash flow minus equipment purchases and finance lease payments) was $1.42B.
During the quarter, AppLovin repurchased and withheld 4.1 million Class A shares at a total cost of $1.4B. That total includes cash used to cover employee tax withholding on vested stock awards, not just open-market buybacks. The board added $3.2B to the buyback program, which brought the total remaining authorization to $3.6B as of the end of October. There were 331.3 million Class A and Class B shares outstanding at September 30.
On the balance sheet, AppLovin held $3.17B in cash against $3.52B in long-term debt, or roughly $340M of net debt. Buybacks shrink the share count, which can raise per-share earnings, but they use cash that could otherwise pay down debt or fund growth. An authorization is permission to buy back stock, not a commitment to do it.
Q4 Guidance: A Projection, Not a Promise
- Revenue: $2.365B to $2.395B (about 43–44% year over year and 8–10% quarter over quarter, per management on the call)
- Adjusted EBITDA: $1.995B to $2.025B
- Adjusted EBITDA margin: 84–85%
Analyst consensus for Q4 revenue was about $2.25B, according to both Investing.com and Benzinga, so the guidance range sits above it. Keep in mind that guidance is management’s forecast, and it can be wrong in either direction. AppLovin also said it couldn’t provide a GAAP reconciliation for its forward adjusted EBITDA outlook because of uncertainty in items such as stock-based compensation.
One more detail: Q4 guidance implies 8–10% sequential growth, slower than Q3’s 14%. Management said the outlook includes normal seasonality and only the model improvements already live.
How the Stock Reacted
Investing.com reported that APP closed at $271.75 on November 4. Benzinga reported the shares trading at $318.57, up 17.28%, in early Thursday trading (its article was timestamped 5:30 AM CT). Premarket prices can swing before the open, and a one-day move says little about long-term value.
Key Takeaways for Learners
- AppLovin is an ad-tech platform. Its results depend heavily on how well its AI models predict which ads will work.
- Q3 beat consensus estimates on EPS, revenue, and Q4 revenue guidance, though the exact consensus figures vary by provider.
- Read GAAP net income alongside adjusted EBITDA, and watch stock-based compensation.
- Buybacks are substantial, and AppLovin also carries about $3.5B in long-term debt.
- Guidance is a forecast. Management said model gains are uneven.
